I moved to Moab, Utah yesterday. I've been moving every 2 days for a while but plan to stay here for 5. Moab is a pure tourist town with all of the normal trappings of such a town. I was surprised by the number of people here since it is still a little early in the season. I'm hoping it is just the unseasonably warm temperature that brought a lot of the locals out this weekend. It is a very popular location for dirt bikes, 4-wheelers, bicycles and hikers. I will see tomorrow if the "herd" thins out or not. :)

Moab is the nearest town of any decent size to two National Parks and one state park. They are: Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park and Dead Horse Point State Park. There will be more on each of those in future posts after I visit them. If they are as good as I've heard, there should be lot of "wow" moments and pictures.

The trip to Moab went through several different landscapes from snow-capped mountains, to scrub brush desert to barren red rock formations. It was another beautiful day for traveling with a bright blue sky and puffy clouds.
Heading south, just outside of Salt Lake City.

Once you leave the interstate, you travel on 2-lane roads that follow the valleys as they cut through the mountains.

Sometimes the valley is wider

There were many clouds but none looked like rain clouds

At times, you could see for miles

It is beginning to change over to scrub brush land

Pretty good sized road cut

Crumbling mountains

I always want to see what is over the next hill and around the next curve.

A shot out my side window to show the desert like condition

The road is long to the far blue mountains

Looking out the side window at the mountain that run parallel to the road for miles and miles. There were no major roads that went in that direction

Another side window shot showing the clouds "puffing up" over the mountains.

Desolate but pretty.

This was taken from a rest area. The road leading away in the distance is Interstate 70 heading east. There is a road that exits and heads south to Moab (you can see the 18 wheeler with the red cab). It was a pretty view and I'm glad they put a rest area here.

Another picture from the rest area

Approaching the rough cut rocky outcroppings. The sky put on a great show today.

I liked this view with the snow-caps in the distance while passing through the rough and dry countryside.

Just on the outskirts of Moab. The red sandstone is brighter than this picture show.

Campsite at Moab KOA. Home for 5 days.
Ya'll take care of each other. I'll Cya down the road.

  1. That roadside rest area is very well located. I have used it a few times also. Keep in mind that even the lesser sights around Moab are worth going to see.

  2. Moab herds shall not be thinning out. To maximize your experience in Arches, read the tips on http://discovermoab.com/archesnationalpark.htm. Reservations are essential for a less frustrating stay.

  3. Don't miss the two districts of Canyonlands (Island in the Sky and Needles) and the Colorado River Gorge. All are close by and awesome. You are actually nearing the end of high season in Moab. April is prime time with cooler temps. Have Fun!
